Our Story

BeDutched started with one refugee family and one open-minded volunteer.

I’ve experienced firsthand what it’s like to settle in a new country, so I jumped at a chance to help other do the same.

At the time I was studying languages at university, where I once again encountered the limits of traditional methods: academic, unengaging, and disconnected from real life. So when I was asked to help our refugees I decided to take a different approach.

No textbooks

No schedules

Only real-life learning

And so what started intuitively became clear:

People don’t come here to learn a language. They come here to build a life. Their Dutch journey should reflect that.

Understanding that changes how you approach everything.

We are not just educators — we are people others rely on when they are finding their place in a new country. For a little while, we become part of someone’s world. People let us in. That takes trust, and it’s something we take very seriously.

This work is about much more than passing on knowledge.
It’s about building relationships, showing empathy, and welcoming people as they are. That can only be done well if you genuinely care. So at BeDutched, care is not an added bonus — it’s the standard we expect from everyone we work with.
